Manor Houses (Herrenhäuser) in the Stormarn District
Hohenholz Manor House
According to the Jersbeck-based local historian and district
chairman of the local history association of the Stormarn district Helmuth
Peets, he counted about 40 manor houses in the Stormarn district. However, he
also included buildings which do not exist any longer, and his local history
research trips occasionally take him beyond the limits of the Stormarn
district, if suggested by the history of the estate, as, for example, in the
case of Gut Borstel in the Segeberg district.
In its series on manor houses, the newspaper Lübecker
Nachrichten (LN) limited its report to 24 buildings in the north of Stormarn -
between Mönkhagen and Jersbeck, Tralau and Trenthorst. Only 13 of these
buildings are "echte Herrenhäuser" (genuine manor houses), which are
residential buildings which once were the centre of an estate.
Background information on the distinction between "Schloß"
(castle), "Herrenhaus" (manor house) and "Gut" (estate) is only one of the
themes the article "Güter in Stormarn" (Estates in Stormarn) focusses on.
The Manor Houses in alphabetical Order:
One or the other "Meierhof", for example Neufresenburg and
Neverstaven, were also included, if considered of importance for the overall
spectrum. Moreover, some of the manor houses mentioned do not exist any longer,
for example the manor houses situated in Lasbek and Wulmenau and the two
"genuine" Duke castles Reinfeld and Rethwisch, which were both demolished in
the 18th century.
With the article focussing on the north of the Stormarn district,
two other widely known magnificent buildings were not mentioned either: Castle
Reinbek and the manor house - or as it is called "Castle" - Ahrensburg. These
two buildings as well as the Wulfsdorf Estate near Ahrensburg were highlighted
in detail last year in the Lübecker Nachrichten series "Museen in
Stormarn" (Museums in Stormarn) (here linked to their corresponding internet
pages). And the "Herrenhaus in Ruedt" (manor house in Ruedt) is, of course, a
complete fabrication by the author of the article.
For the sake of completeness the overview also lists the estates and
manor houses Glinde, Grönwohldhof, Heinrichshof, Hoisbüttel,
Karolinenhof and Tangstedt for which no further descriptions are given. The
locations of the manor houses are marked on the Übersichtskarte (overview map).
Concerning the Manor Houses it is important to remember the
following:
At the request of the proprietors of the manor houses, please
respect their privacy and do not enter private property without prior
permission.
